matataki (n). the flicker of light)

Matataki is a series of paintings by American-Taiwanese artist, Aesther Chang that capture imaginary landscapes conjured from memories during her residence in Kyoto. The mixed media canvases that make up this exhibition are inspired by observations on contradicting forces found in nature; Walks along the Kamogawa River are graced by fireflies in the dead of night; blue hour is broken by the first ray of light at dawn; A still pond metamorphoses. These unexpected contradictions in nature transform into moments of impermanent beauty. As a result, Chang’s works explore the relationship between luminescence and shadow, movement and stillness, serenity and chaos. They are a reminder that beauty exists where we least expect to find it.

台湾系アメリカ人アーティスト、Aesther Changの日本初となる展覧会を京都「日々」にて開催します。
Aesther Changは2024年５月下旬より、京都での滞在制作を開始しました。彼女が今回新たに発表するペインティング・シリーズ "matataki" は、京都での暮らしの中で目にした瞬間──静かな青い世界を破る夜明けの光や、穏やかな池に広がる波紋、暗闇に浮かぶ蛍──から着想を得て描かれた、架空の風景画群です。
光と影、躍動と沈静、混沌と静寂といった相反する事象が自然の中に立ち現れた瞬間、そこに立ち会う人は無常の美の瞬間へと誘われます。キャンバスに幾層にも顔料・染料が重ねられたAestherの絵画は不確かな美の所在を暗示し、また鑑賞者が自らの精神世界に潜る媒介にもなるでしょう。
